Happy [Belated] 8th Blogiversary, The Academic Wino!

On June 8th, 2011, The Academic Wino was born! Happy Blogiversary to me!

I’m a little late with posting, as on the actual anniversary I was travelling in France and then when I got back, my baby required a lot more of my attention than usual. It’s not easy finding time to blog with two small kids, so thank you for your patience during this short hiatus in posting!

That said, I can’t believe it’s been 8 years already since I started The Academic Wino blog! It’s been quite a journey, and I am so grateful for all the opportunities I’ve received along the way.

First up, a few social media stats:

  • 1 Year Blogiversary: About 1000 Twitter followers, and unsure of the number of Facebook “likes”.
  • 2 Year Blogiversary: 2,738 Twitter followers and 488 “likes” on Facebook.

Professional Highlights During the Past Year

During this past year, I continued to post regularly on the blog, as well as freelance pieces for various publications. I did not write with as much frequency this past year, however, since I gave birth to my second child and thus have been very busy keeping up with him and his high-energy brother.

This year, I was short-listed for two Born Digital Wine Awards: Best Editorial/Opinion Wine Writing and Best Tourism Content with a Focus on Wine.

I’m happy to report that my piece for Spirited Magazine, The Future of Fermentation: The Role of Synthetic Yeast in Winemaking , won 3rd Place in the Best Editorial/Opinion Wine Writing category!

Travel highlights during this past year include my recent trip to Beaujolais and Provence, to spend time touring and talking with George and Franck Duboeuf and some of the chateaus they work with for their many brands, as well as Valérie Rouselle, owner of Chateau Roubine in Provence. Despite it being the first time away from my new baby, I had an amazing time and learned so much in the short time I was there. I plan on writing some articles related to my trip in the near future, so stay tuned for those.

Personal Highlights During the Past Year

I’d have to say, hands down, the biggest thing to happen to me in this past year was the birth of my second child, another son, Thomas. He joins his brother Alex, who is now almost 3.5 years old.

Thomas is just about 6 months old now, can roll over with ease, has two teeth, and is quite the charmer. He more or less sitting independently now, though an adult still needs to be close by to catch stray flops. He seems as though he really wants to crawl as well, so I’m guessing he’ll check off that skill sooner than later.

Alex is still big into sports (he’s going to be an All-American, I just know it) and construction equipment. Some things never change 🙂 He doesn’t know this yet, but in a couple of weeks were taking him to an event where he gets to operate REAL construction equipment. It’s going to be the greatest day of his little life!

These boys definitely keep me on my toes, and my heart is so full whenever I see them interacting together. They already love each other so much—I only hope this sentiment continues 😉 That said, these boys definitely keep me busy, thus why my posting frequency has decreased a bit. I’m sure you all understand!

To Wrap Up….

Thank you again to every single one of you who have supported me in one way or another as without you, The Academic Wino is just another blip in the matrix.

Never stop asking questions.

Never stop learning.

Be kind.  Be happy.  Drink wine.

Thank you….
